Wow it's hard to imagine doing much with the old 4 bangers (4 bit wide digital word). When I moved from 8 bit to 16 bit processors the improvement was more than I expected (like 256x more )..
AFAIK 4 bit processors are still widely used inside LCD modules, but thats probably about it.
