A quick update to this project...
I've now paired a THAT5173 gain controller to the 1570's flying rails. The 5173's 3V3 supply also flies and is derived from the flying positive rail.
With the 5173 the gain range is 0 dB to +60 or 10 dB to +70.
The 5173's SPI lines are opto-isolated from the grounded (not flying) USB-based gain controller CPU using Avago demo boards. http://www.avagotech.com/docs/AV02-3160EN
There's nothing very hard about doing this....
