Affordable umblicals.

Post by billshurv » Wed Feb 20, 2019 5:57 am

I've realised that I have backed myself into a corner with the nice suspended child resistant shelves I put up to put the stereo on as it's a giant pain to get to the back of units to plug cables in. As I'm yet to put the connectors on the new preamp the temptation is high to stick Dsub25s on there and a couple of umbilical cables, which may also hold off my need to put the 24 relay input switching network in and this can be added later when I add extra boards to the preamp.

Now given the lack of a bench or workshop to call my own at the moment I do everything on a small desk which makes soldering lots of connections a slight pain and metalwork challenging so I looked around to see what might be ready made to speed me up. Came across this

https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg0 ... dp/AV14526

Now you can't normally buy 8 XLRs for that and labour to buid one onshore is greater than the sale price here. I suspect it's made of cheese but even as a stop gap and given for domestic use only it doesn't have to be grunt proof. Any reason not to go for this even if as a learning experience so as not to do it again!

Plan B is wall plates...

That's a good price Bill.
That CPC/Farnell site is new to me here in the US.
It looks like the cables are the same ones we see here in the MCM brand at Newark.

I've also used the Planet Waves umbilicals from Amazon when I used to shop there.
They were good cables but a D to XLR breakout in that brand has gotten expensive.
Amazon has Hosa breakouts for about $50 US.

They'll grow up fast Bill...
Seems like yesterday I adopted a 10 year-old. She's 29 now and getting married this year.

Newark is part of the farnell group so probably is the same.

I'm amazed at how many ways they can brand the same company.

My older brother and I are 9 years apart; 20 is quite a span.

wikipedia is slightly out of data I believe but here is the permutation list. All part of Avnet now as well
The group trades globally under the following company names:

element14 Group

Farnell element14 in the UK and Europe
Newark element14 in the United States, Canada and Mexico
element14 in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, China and Singapore
element14 community, an online information hub and forum for electrical engineers.

Non Core Brands

CPC in the UK
Shenzhen Embest Technology
MCM Electronics in the United States
AVID Technologies

Boggle!

It's all my fault for starting again after my divorce and remarriage. But all is good :)

And wife has approved the umblical. That makes the metalwork a lot easier :), esp if I use a DB25 on the outputs as well.

Glad she signed off on your purchase order there Bill.
I told you earlier she was a keeper.

I also remember Premier or Premiere Farnell.
I wasn't aware that Avnet had gobbled up Farnell et al.

Did they buy Radio Spares/RS?
A lot of my SSL parts came from Radio Spares.

RS are still the same company as always, although they ate Allied to get a US base.

I still remember the joy of the new radio spares catalogue, when it was just one catalogue!

Didn't know RS bought Allied.

I get excellent service from both Mouser and Allied because they are so close.

With Mouser I can usually get an order in by 7 PM and have it the next afternoon by UPS Ground.

Allied has the best prices I’ve found for the Electroswitch C4 rotarty switches I use. $16.08 for a 1 pol 12 pos switch in singles. They are indestructible but large and high torque.

The 2 pol 12 pos switches I’m using for gain in the T Filter EQ were about $22.00 when I bought them. I’d like a 24 pos switch but at about 8 times the price for an Goldpoint Elma I’m trying to make due.
