Re: The Corona Virus Hoax of 2020

I won't watch anything with a supporter of Andrew Wakefield in it. She may have a valid point but has the wrong allies.

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

I had forgotten JP had an account here. So we have JR and JP posting next to each other and I'm already getting confused :D

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

Agree the generator behaviour is very different but the moving mass is similar, if anything lower with MM despite what some people claim so the mechanical performance should be similar UNLESS the compliance is a major contributor. Certainly something to test.

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

Looks about right (0.5dB down at 20kHz) although that teeny dip in the midrange isn't explained by the generator electrical model. But I know that Fidelis have a lot of test records so the results should be accurate. A sweep up to 40kHz is really needed to tease out what is happening.

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

That is certainly the theory. But as it makes no sense from an MC perspective and they use the same cantilevers as MM there must be something else going on. Note that in the paper I quoted the mechanical resonance was frigged to give the answer they wanted but since it then drove the design of an 'i...

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

My Stanton 681, with only a cable Cload (maybe 120 pF) makes a cymbal crash sound like trash can lids. BTW sorry for slightly de-railing things here. I don't doubt the stanton is unhappy at that load. There are a multitude of generators out there. I don't have a 681 but I have a range from 40mH to ...

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

Curiously old time phono preamps were quite crude also... But these days a lot of them have a fixed 250pF loading which is REALLY crude. I need to stop talking before I insult modern vinyl aficionados. no chance of that with me as I know I am polishing a turd. I vaguely recall a CD4 vinyl system wh...

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

Bill, I'm not sure what those graphs are showing could you explain them a little? Top left is the inductance sweep. next to that is the equivalent model. Top right you can ignore as that is simulating current mode operation. Bottom is the frequency response of the generator based on the equivalent ...

Re: Phono Transfer System Construction Information

I'd go further. Phono stage manufacturers IMO generally are clueless on MM, maybe as they want people to upgrade and spend more for MC. I'm inclined to get a little defensive about this, as I have designed both types. Indeed MM cartridges cover entry level all the way up to relatively high end, so ...

Re: Am I in the wrong business?

Vinyl and replay equipment prices have gone silly in last 4 years. Stuff I was picking up for $100 is now $400. I should have started collecting earlier, but at least now have all I need for the rest of my vinyl playing days :) If you have time and some woodworking skills this sort of approach https...
