Re: Resistor orientation

What does fail are TO-220 package leads. Just can’t take the vibration.
Curious - Where do they fail? Inside the package or lead-to-board connections? Is it with a big heat sink as mechanical load problem?

There's a lot to be said for flying leads to power devices.

Re: Resistor orientation

One other point is that discrete op amps are always potted except for home made units. I doubt John Hardy would consider using vertical mounting if the product were not to be potted. Good points all Roger. WRT the above I think another reason for potting is to aid thermal equilibrium between device...

Re: Resistor orientation

I think vertical mounting became a big "no-no" back when people were actually auto-inserting through-hole parts. (I guess they still do.) For DIY as you point out it doesn't really matter. There sure are a lot of vertical parts being stuffed into 990 and 2520 modules. Most of the Vectorboards I buil...

Re: Great people, Who would you want to meet?

Great people, Who would you want to meet? I would like to meet - for a second time - the very proud man I met on December 25, 2001 while delivering Christmas dinner for Meals on Wheels. I did not fully know who he was but I sensed greatness when I delivered food to this very lonely, humble, man. Our...

desol - You just reminded me that we have some soundfiles that need posting. I hope to get some web-work done today. BTW: I edited the thread title a little bit - hope you don't mind. I do have this stereo demo: http://www.proaudiodesignforum.com/Content/Julie_London_Blue_Moon_full_compressio...

Re: Using the THAT1646 As A Transistor Pre-Driver/Headphone Amp

While going through my office I found the following article describing a simple null tester to measure low-level THD: http://electronicdesign.com/Articles/ArticleID/8188/8188.html This allows the generator THD, to a significant degree, to be nulled while amplifying the device under test's THD to mor...

Re: Relay Bypass - "full" or "half"?

haima - On Roger's original stereo prototype he did full bypass and later changed it to half bypass. It saved a lot of board space and cost. I've seen stuff occasionally load outputs when turned off but very rarely. The one I immediately recall was a -10 consumer item. I think that with modern bridg...

A Stereo Width Control Using the THAT1240

Update 12/8/2014: See https://www.proaudiodesignforum.com/forum/php/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=681 Hello everyone. Here's a circuit that's been rolling around in my head for some time now that I thought needed to be out there. Every since the 1240 M-S Matrix post everyone has been asking for a width contro...

Re: Using the THAT1646 As A Transistor Pre-Driver/Headphone Amp

Thanks Roger. Don't have a finished schematic yet but the one posted is really close. The only changes are: 1) Added 22/25V bypass caps, one set. 2) Changed the output R to 27 ohms from 33. 3) Added a dual 10K audio taped pot with the wiper tied to the input. I do think it needs an input gain stage ...
