Re: Holman, Dynamic Range Phono Preamplifiers, Audio July 19
Thanks for this Wayne. It was my Bible for the performance requirements of Phono Preamps. I don't agree with everything he said but IMHO, the info there is nearly complete. A couple of points from my small experience as a wannabe cartridge designer. Fig 1 shows 3 regions. AMPLITUDE LIMITED High comp...

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
I'm seeing that -65 dBu number and wondering how far above 0 dBu is the "overload" point. Or, IOW, what is the total dynamic range of a good record? Tomlinson Holman (da THX man) did an article for Audio magazine which looked at maximum theoretical & practical levels on vinyl using th...

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
In the MS domain it is possible to HPF Side with high-order and a relatively high cutoff to aggressively filter warp without being too intrusive. Eric, one of our members, suggested this approach and may be using it. http://www.proaudiodesignforum.com/forum/php/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=112&p=568...

Re: THAT 4315 question
You need to do something like this. You can't do an electronic xover between bass & treble with textbook filters. It's the ACOUSTIC response that has be LR4, Arthur-Smythe, Butterworth bla bla. Hence no values shown around U6a & U3a. But the xover between 'clean' bass & 'controlled' bass...

Re: PCB layout - ground plane for PSU/star point
There's loadsa issues about using ground planes for high quality audio but I don't think it can be taught in a forum like this. But do listen to what the gurus here suggest. eg JR about ripple & signal current. My $0.02 is to make sure you have Cutouts in the Ground Plane under any tracks connec...

Re: THAT 4315 question
I've been using Design Note 04 - Improving Loudspeaker Signal Handling Capability (217k) ... I'm pleased THAT conducted listening tests on this device. However, there are a few items that show they are electricians rather than horny handed speaker designers. ;) Their tests show 'better' results for...

You gonna explain to us mere mortals what dis magic trick is?mediatechnology wrote:I found (by accident) that simply steering the warp from Side to Mid made a big difference in listenability.

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
The question is if this filter impulse response makes it more difficult to de-click cleanly. A HPF should not delay the HF energy in clicks and pops, but if there is any DC or LF content in those transient perturbations, that can get smeared. I don't know how the click and pop removers deal with LF...

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
What I'm wondering about is whether to make U2A a second or third-order HP filter. Though it can be made part of the RIAA DSP definition I can't see any advantage to recording warp and rumble. The stage is already there and 6 dB/octave so why not make it 12 or 18? You need to check the Impulse Resp...
