Re: Gentle persuasion over time

Tree is down.
Great. Job done.
I understand the steering line had no effect.
I doubt more tension would have make it effective, this rarely works. A steering line can make things more dangerous.

Re: Entropy

I have a power meter and see a difference between pulling air and pulling water This could be a nice way to detect water low enough to turn the pump off. Nice because this is free from float switch issues and keeps pumping at the lowest possible water level. The float assembly actually has two floa...

Re: Entropy

The ground water level down in the crawl space was finally high enough to turn on the sump pump... I may revisit this weekend to reconsider the float threshold level a little lower. [/update] JR The lower the better. But.... 1 When set too low, the pump might never stop because of loosing priming w...

Re: Entropy

I purchased a stainless steel strainer to use as a basket to sit it in and keep major debris from clogging it up. A nice hillbilly stainless steel strainer is a washing machine drum. I have started dismantling a washing machine, a work for rainy days. The starting motor AC capacitor is another nice...

Re: Entropy

Because the access to your crawl space seems troublesome, the alternative to a submerged pump is a surface pump. In this configuration the pump is at ground level or a bit higher at an easy access location. Down you only have passive stuff: Intake pipe and foot valve. Here you do need, no air leak f...

Re: Entropy

Centrifugal pumps are simple in the principle.... But all is in the details, and there are many variations according to different needs. Pumping does require the impeller running in water. Air is the enemy. There are tricks and so callded self priming pumps, but more or less effective, if not plain ...

Re: Entropy

An air leak at the intake side is no problem if underwater. Indeed air locks at the output is an issue. While priming, all air trapped and bubbles must be flushed out. The pump is fully primed only when all air has been purged. So the out pipes should have the right shape to prevent air traps. A sma...

Re: Entropy

It seems this troublesome pump has no foot valve or this valve is bad.
( Forgive me, I do not know wether sump pumps have a foot valve )
With the centrifugal pumps, I know well, a leaky foot valve is about the second trouble next to air leak at the intake side.

Re: Entropy

Inspect closely the O ring for scratch or pinch that could damage its "skin". As you probably are aware of, O ring seals are mostly excellent, but ask for perfect race surfaces. I would not expect good result adding some paste or sealant. I might add some lubricant, as long as it is safe o...

Re: Entropy

Well, you'll have a spare 1/2 HP pump.
May be more reliable than brand new, new stuff.
I like old stuff I repair, rather than today's junk.

Can we have a picture of the hairline crack ?
