Re: LED Temperature Coefficients When Used as Bias Sources

Maybe so, but other than the bulk resistance effects - and I haven't correlated it - it would appear that Vf, wavelength, chemistry and tempco are all interrelated. I'm talking out of my ass here... Lets see.. the wavelength has something to do with the electron orbit energy potenial so it seems X ...

Re: LED Temperature Coefficients When Used as Bias Sources

Using parts outside their app note targets, is a little like using prescription drugs for diseases they aren't approved for. The manufacturer may change their process and never tell you as long as they continue to meet their published specs. Sounds a little scary to me for mass production, but you k...

Re: new shiny hammer- or Universal comp

Good point, for the simple meter and fixed thresholds it is far more efficient to do the math only once. As it is now, I actually compute the 3 dB meter thresholds on power up, but only because I'm too lazy to key in the data,,,(and thresholds may change... it's not my application) My RMS experiment...

Re: Phono Preamps

I'm not sure what the question is, but yes I have opinions about phono preamps. The Jung/White pre looks decent, and is better than one I published that same year in Popular Electronics. My circa 1978 preamp was actually two pre's inside a Disco Mixer. That first one from me, was based on the LM387 ...

Re: new shiny hammer- or Universal comp

There are two directions to go with this.. "Value" where I could probably manage a by 8 comp with 1 micro proc and 4 cheaper dual VCAs. I might be able to squeak in a couple side chain inputs.. maybe 8 +2 inputs 8 outputs. This can be fully computer control but with flash memory you can di...

Re: new shiny hammer- or Universal comp

I need to make this like a plug in, where the comp faceplate and controls comes up in a computer program so the hardware is super simple , bal in, VCA, bal out. perhaps with a level and VCA status meter but not necessarily. I could use USB port to communicate between comp and PC or MAC.. Of course m...

Re: Removing caps from a NE5532 based mixing console

The 5532 is a fair performer so I wouldn't expect night and day differences from massive swap outs there/ ====== Regarding the small caps, yes they are in the audio path but typically LPF tuned for 10's of kHz. Logically any non linearity would cause distortion well above the passband but in practic...

Re: new shiny hammer- or Universal comp

I have real work to consider but my desire would be to probably make a finished small pcb with maybe a handful of parts around the micro. The basic module would be set up for 2 audio inputs and 2 serial digital outputs. Pushing the data out serial would allow more flexibility after the fact. For exa...

Re: new shiny hammer- or Universal comp

I'm starting out with 12 bit a/d and rectifying that which leaves me with 11 bit raw data.. Ieft shift it up to top of 16 bit word and square it I get a 32 bit result but I just use top 16bits... the final result is parsed to only 3dB steps displaying around a 50 dB range. Which is maybe 9 bits...It...

Re: new shiny hammer- or Universal comp

Not to hijack my own thread  but i finished my little console meter project and I really like working with the 16 bit PIC micro. Even though I could make a passable meter with the old 8 bitter (10b a/d) the 16b (12b a/d) was much nicer. For jollies, I coded up a true RMS algorithm for the VU po...
