Radio Shack Corporate Headquarters Auction

Post by mediatechnology »

Memorabilia from Radio Shack's Fort Worth Headquarters is being auctioned.
From humble beginnings in Boston in 1921, over the past 95 years RadioShack established itself as a globally recognized leader and the go to retailer for consumer electronics. RadioShack has always been known as the place for answers to the American public's technology and electronics questions. "You've got questions, we've got answers." Over the years, RadioShack introduced consumers to exciting and affordable gadgets and electronics that have become household items. As we cleaned out our historic archives in Fort Worth, Texas, we uncovered a cache of iconic memorabilia in 12 huge safes, including: unused original TRS-80 Microcomputers, Realistic Transistor Radios, Tandy computer software games, original brick cell phones and so much more. We all remember coming into RadioShack whether it was for the battery-of-the-month, new walkie-talkies, or to check out the newest RC toy cars. Now we reintroduce many of those nostalgic items and more with our rolling online memorabilia auction.

I'm left with a sad sick feeling looking at this stuff.
Its like someone died and I'm going through the estate sale.

It's totally like an estate sale. Sickly feeling is realizing a 'museum' is being broken up and auctioned. They really need more random framed things to sell. My favorite lot is #142 - TUBE AMP, CELLULAR PHONE, ELECTROSTAT SPEAKER (1958). Random.
Best,

Now I don't feel so bad about making a gold plated CS800 at Peavey to celebrate 500,000 amps sold (1M channels). It is still a painful memory when my plan to use gold "colored" plastic escutcheon face plates got changed to actual gold plated metal faceplates, when my boss (Melia Peavey) announced the promotion at a large dealer sales meeting and the industry press picked up and published her promise of "22 carat gold". So it was back to the drawing board for me, to figure out how to do it in real gold (for the same price.. nah it lost Peavey a pile of money). Note: there were hundreds of these sold so they are unlikely to become rare collectors items in my lifetime.

This was harder than it looks. The gold plating was so thin I had issues with some rusting

It is a little sad about radio shack (Tandy leather?, Realistic? whatever). Their decline is typical of the archaic bricks and mortar model. Their strength used to be that there were so many stores, one was close to most of the population. Now that asset became a liability. They wisely tried to leverage the distribution into other mass market consumer products but not effectively enough. Change of this scale is hard.

------
Another interesting example of this is the slow motion train wreck of Sears... Ironically they started as a massive direct sales (mail order) merchant. Perhaps they need to revisit their historical roots but with web sales? They still have respected brands that could support a decent business, less all the expensive real estate.

I marvel at how things have come full circle from Sears mail order to storefront and then back to internet-based mail order.
As far as mail order goes distribution has gotten more efficient but the only thing that's really changed is elimination of the catalog.

The Dan Bell dead mall series is hard to stop watching.
