The TL071, TL072 and TL074 "H" Next Generation Enhanced Versions

It looks like TI fixed some of the TL07X's issues and on November 13, 2020 quietly introduced a new "H" version.
The TL07xH (TL071H, TL072H, and TL074H) family of devices are the next-generation versions of the industry-standard TL07x (TL071, TL072, and TL074) devices. These devices provide outstanding value for cost-sensitive applications, with features including low offset (1 mV, typical), high slew rate (20 V/μs), and common-mode input to the positive supply. High ESD (1.5 kV, HBM), integrated EMI and RF filters, and operation across the full –40°C to 125°C enable the TL07xH devices to be used in the most rugged and demanding applications.

In addition to offset voltage and improved common mode range the new "H" version now has a maximum 42V (+/-21v) supply voltage allowing it to be used with 36V rails.

When the TL074 was first introduced in the late 1970s and was not yet in distribution I drove to TI in Richardson and picked up some of the first samples produced.

Looks like process upgrades/improvements.

From notes, they still haven't fixed the polarity reverse when inputs get close to - rail, unless they forgot to mention that.

It's confusing because they split some of the tables.

Tables 6.5 and 6.6 are one place I found a reference to the Vcm differences.

For the TL07xH the Vcm range is Vee+2V; for the original TL07x it's Vee+4V. (They call it Vcc- )
So the H version of the TL07x has 2V more Vcm range.

But does it polarity invert when overdriven?
There's also figure 6.28 in section 6.29 "Typical Characteristics: TL07xH" where they show input overdrive without polarity reversal.

TL07xH Overdrive

I'm not sure we know they answer to polarity inversion because the amount of overdrive is relatively small.

My bad... I didn't catch that but saw a written warning probably referring to the old non-H versions. Something like avoiding 1V from minus rail.

I did find another "H" spec that looks like 1/2V below - rail is OK.

PS: I don't see anything obvious different about the internal schematic but I guess it is possible that fixing the polarity reversal is a consequence of improving process related device characteristics.

The data sheet changes were hard to follow because there are large blocks of tables and figures spanning multiple pages only for the H-series.
It would have been better if each page, or caption for the figures had some label telling the reader they were looking at the new and improved version.

It's been a long time since I looked at it but I recall the OPA2604 having some type of bootstrapping to prevent it from reversing polarity.
If the input were driven close to clipping a very small "tip" of reversed polarity signal would briefly appear riding on the waveform crest.
It would then disappear and soft-clip.
If the level was backed off and then the clipping point approached again it would briefly reappear.

They may have figured out some simple way to fix the reversal by bootstrapping or clamping in the H version without having to do a mask change.
Or maybe the relaid out the whole thing for a new process on a larger diameter line.

It doesn't look like they have parts in stock yet to test one.

It would be nice to see an updated schematic if they changed the insides.

It is not surprising that they may want to call a new part by the old part number to keep all the design-in volume... (like the sundry newer 2n3055s that are not the same as the original).

I checked and digikey has inventory on both H and non-H parts including TL07x from non-TI vendors.

The price looked similar so perhaps they are going for seamless transition to the new (improved part).

Thanks for checking Digi-Key.
I had looked at Mouser and on TI's own product page and couldn't find them.

The one thing that didn't improve is the noise performance.

Can you send me the link to the TI "H" parts?
I couldn't find them on Digi-Key either.

I was looking for the TL072H which they don't yet stock instead of the TL074H.
That explains why I didn't find any.

Also checked the TI store.
At the moment only the TL074H in SMT is available.
