Group DIY Censorship Is Out Of Control

Relax in southern comfort on the east bank of the Mississippi. You're just around the corner from Beale Street and Sun Records. Watch the ducks, throw back a few and tell us what's on your mind.

I appreciate the tips ....Went ahead and posted your advice over there...
Really weird what's been going on over at gdiy... I hope JR is doing ok....
I know under his robotic like exterior, he's got a good heart....

Did you see how waybackmachine was hacked recently? that was eerie..... seeing it down for so long really put things into perspective...Like losing history.....
One thing I saw when I read the wayback machine's x post or maybe it was FB, it was verified that 1984 was pulled from the archives....
crazy...Who does that?

Thanks for the welcome... It's nice to see all of you hanging out...
With things so crazy lately, I've been spending more time on the truck forum than anywhere... I used to enjoy Gdiy for the brewery discourse because you'd get a lot of info...
But whatever.... I already know things are f'd so, since it's affecting my life in many ways, I've got plenty to keep me busy.
I was hanging out with my son's car at the gas station the other day waiting for AAA... 3hours.... The crazy thing was that water was the most expensive liquid there I could buy... $3.80 for a quart... I could have gotten 16oz for $3.40..... there were no gallons or anything cheaper....
Jeez...

I remember around 10 years back I was looking for a copy of "the Microphone engineering handbook' ,
I searched high and low for a paper copy but prices were off the scale when copies came up ,
In the end I did a search for the book in the local university library , sure enough they had it on the shelf ,
I had a friend in the college at the time and I asked her to borrow the book and have it photocopied and bound for me .
She agreed , went upto the library , borrowed the book but on her way out the gate her head of faculty was waiting ,
He identified the book as asked why she wanted it , she didnt really have any answer for him but she was within her rights to borrow any book she liked from the library , so there was nothing he could do to stop her .
Still, an odd situation though .

Anyways I had a good readthrough of the book , turns out theres a lot of stuff in there thats lets say 'dual use' ,it might have some applications in a civilian setting ,but subjects like laser interferometry and bone conduction mics might be of strategic importance . One contributor even postulates about a wireless(blue)tooth mic which uses a piezo actuator to pickup up the users voice due to vibrations in the jaw bone ,but also with an abillity to transmit sound directly into a persons head via the same transducer ,driven with a signal .

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-ne ... 180970284/
Mic ENG Handbook was around since the mid 80's , its pretty obvious the tooth microphone concept was of signifigant strategic value to the military industrial complex .
heres an updated advertisment from 2021 for 'Sonitus',
https://nta.org/2021/11/12/molar-microp ... t-headset/

I see in a recent post over at Gdiy , a relatively new contributor is in possesion of a large collection of documents from one of the major US audio companies , Ive heard rumours before that theres a set of definitive documents relating to audio transmission ,equalisation using transformers , from what I gather much of this data comes in the form of tables and slide rules ,so no major maths is required ,
there are references to said documents on the net , I found one and made a post about it somewhere on Gdiy , but the actual documents themslelves are withheld ,closely guarded .
The problem with donating a collection of this magnitude to a university is it will be put under lock and key ,only a certain chosen few will have access , thankfully now it seems the person invloved has had a change of heart , and isnt going to make a bonfire at least ,

I hope Big Pauly does the right thing .

Funny you mention Orwells 1984 ,
I did pick up a paper copy recently off the floor at the recycle centre , it does seem to very much form the basis of the era we now find ourselves in technologically ,
Cloud computing , poof and the whole thing is gone , orphaned in cyberspace , then Googles I/P department moves in agressively on it , it all bears more of a resemblance to bit coin mining when you think about it .

The other slightly disturbing aspect of GDIY is , it doesnt appear on the wayback machine at all , so we cant go back and look at posts that subsequently bit the dust .
Conveniently it allows any malfeasances to be swept firlmy under the carpet .

I've always wanted to buy a copy of the Microphone Engineering Handbook, but every time I look on Amazon or Bookfinder the prices are over the $400 range. No way Jose.

Edit: I didn't know that GDIY was no longer on the Wayback Machine. It definitely used to be there some years ago, since I remember looking for some old broken links on Wayback Machine and I did find them there. Probably they asked to be removed.

I know twinx used to be on there and I grabbed a bunch of stuff many years ago.... Mostly NYD stuff. But it's pretty much broken now when you try to use it...
Waybackmachine has a feature I guess on the main page that allows you to save a site but, it looks like that feature is not working atm....
I will try it if I can't remember....maybe it'll work....

Even back in 2005 it was out of print and commanding a high price .

400-500 dollars US seems to be the going rate for it stateside these days ,
but I did see it for around 120 euros on amazon.de today.
Uk prices seem to be in a similar range .
Still very costly , and like Marik says ,it wont teach you how to build mics , but it does outline the principles of opperation of all the main kinds .

I think I posted a chapter or two from the Mic Eng handbook over at Gdiy someplace , cant remember where ,
I can scan a chapter here or there if anyone needs it badly .

Links to external web pages on GDIY might break over time , even though Gdiy itself isnt included , you might still be able to find links to stuff there . Is there any reasonable explanation for GDIY not being included on wayback ? I cant think of any legitimate reason .

My main interest in that book is the chapter on the Cohen Mic Preamp. I think it was written by Peter Baxandall but I could be wrong. In any case, the Mic Pre chapter is available as a pdf online by someone maintaining a website dedicated to Cohen.

Good riddance.

You have to wait 15 days for it to be deleted. If there is a GDIY cookie on in your cache they won't even let you view the forum. That's coercive and dumb: all you have to do is clear the cookie and you can view the forum. But I simply don't go there anymore so it doesn't really matter.

People with conservative viewpoints or those that challenge the government "narrative" are simply not welcome at GroupDIY. For that and other reasons the place is fucking hostile e.g. thormzt.

I locked horns with Thor in the past but we both ended up patching things up. Don't know how things are doing now.
